Mayfield

After leaving Tears for Fears in 1990, Curt Smith moved to New York, He acclimated to his new life there by hosting an MTV show, as well as a new music radio show that was syndicated to over 300 U.S. colleges, and by teaching a music industry course at New York University. Then, in 1995 a mutual friend introduced him to songwriter-guitarist Charlton Pettus. “I liked him, even though he used the word ‘meritocracy’ in the first sentence he spoke to me,” Smith jokes. “I liked his passion. I’d spent so much time around people in the industry whose prime concern was business and income, that talking to someone whose love of music was so obvious made me realize why I’d become a musician in the first place.”

Smith and Pettus began writing together and formed a band called Mayfield. “It was first and foremost a live band,” Smith explains. “I wanted to play gigs in small clubs, and record without the use of too much technology.” Mayfield released a self-titled album in 1997. “I loved it,” Smith says. “Technically it could have undoubtedly been better, but that would have been missing the point.”

Curt, this album is gem! I just ordered it online.

brilliant under rated album!

Would love to hear more of these classics on your next gigs Curt! "What Are We Fighting For" was awesome when you played it! Maybe some more of "Snow Hill" and "Mother England." Love how Mother England switched form 6/8 then to 4/4 time. VERY COOL!! I think these are real good tunes with acoustic versions. Oh yeah and what about that tune 'Who You Are"? Some tunes to think about next gigs at the Standards along with new written material! you continue to amaze all of us man in any of these gigs!

I listen to this album as I attempt to run every morning! Thank you for giving such a gift Curt, Charleton and the lovely rest of Mayfield. My very favorite is Sorry Town as well as Reach Out. The prose and riddle-like lyrics make me think and touch my heart! Your music is a symphony full of talent.
Thank you for sharing your gifts you possess!

Halfway Home

A demo recording that was done for a television pilot. They didn't pick the song, but the pilot didn't get picked up either, obviously due to the producers' musical sensibilities ;).
