Tears For Fears / Roland Orzabal
We wanted an old English sports car that was like my own. I owned (and still have to this day) a 1959 Triumph TR3A, we couldn't find one for the shoot and the Austin Healey was the closest.
Charlton doesn't suck!
We tend to do the songs that work or that we know people desperately want to hear. In general that means the hits. We prefer to play as much new music as possible and the hits on "The Hurting" were all sung by me.
Who knows? Dates will be announced as and when they're booked.
Far too many to choose from but I think "Come Together" would be one of our favorites.
Sowing The Seeds Of Love. It's the one video that really captures visually what we were trying to achieve musically.
Wow - I remember Johnny Waller, my recollection of I Can't Get To Sleep however is not so good. I know it was an actual song but I think it fell by the wayside as better songs were written.
Oops - I've only just read this and apologize!!!!!
To be honest I don't remember who was #1 before or after us, too busy enjoying the #1ness
The Hurting - 8/10 - fantastic for it's time but hasn't aged as well due to the production.
SFTBC - 9/10 - a very complete album musically, lyrically and it's production has held up well
SOL - 6/10 - I still however think that the track Sowing The Seeds Of Love is as near to perfection as we've got, unfortunately I think the album in general has too many weak songs and overblown production
ELAHE - 9/10 - I believe every song is strong and the production and feel is refreshingly relaxed
Bad clothing, especially the Katherine Hamnett pants that look like diapers.
One of my favorite tracks. We played it over the PA before every gig in 1985 and it was a fantastic intro.
None whatsoever but would love to hear it - anyone?
No plans at the moment, but as I've said before you'll be the first to know.
No plans right now but you'll be the first to know.
Being a technical retard I have no clue. I am however a big surround sound fan and after experiencing Love twice in Las Vegas would love to do ELAHE in surround. Whether we have the time or finances to do it is another question.
Technical questions are really not my forte - suffice to say that I would love (forgive the pun) at some point to do great surround sound mixes of what we've done.
I think it would have been a little confusing if it wasn't TFF.
As I've said before, we have no further TFF plans apart from Germany this year. Anything new will of course be posted here first.
I looked and don't see her anywhere in the video, she is however quite prominent in the Sowing The Seeds Of Love video.
Not currently but I will of course keep you posted here should that happen.
I believe we did do Killing With Kindness. Ladybird turned out to be a little too complex to perform live.
I'm not aware of any statue, maybe someone from Bath could let us know.
At many points in any relationship bad things are said in the heat of the moment. Roland approached me to do another record and neither of us has spoken about it. We're grown up enough to know that in the grand scheme of things it's unimportant.
Sowing The Seeds Of Love
We met, I asked and she said yes.
Who knows? It would depend on what mood he was in. Personally I think you should always approach someone if you want, the worst that could happen is that they tell you to go away.
We both do to a certain degree as we think an album should always have balance.
Charlton & I.
The chorus.
Anything we were listening to or had listened to (Floyd, Flaming Lips, Air, Beatles etc.). We honestly don't think about it but work on the premise that we should make the best album possible at that given moment.
Polyamorous? We get on much better that way.
No, they're in Bath outside his house and I'm in LA. There's always Google Earth I suppose.
Secret World (sometimes alternating w/ Size Of Sorrow)
I must confess that it's not one of my favorite songs even though I do as you say sing it well :)
We of course never say never.
I think it was a great piece of production. STSOL itself is probably still the closest we've come to perfection. My only negative is that I think a couple of the tracks were substandard and meandering.
I don't believe Roland does and thanks for the love!!
Over the last few years I've seen Nikki, Oleta and Ian Stanley. LOVE Goldfrapp.
No plans at the moment.
For me unfortunately it's only been Japan. Would love to do more but only time will tell.
For anyone to use samples of our music on a commercial release they need to ask our permission, give us a writing credit and pay royalties. Some I like more than others :)
This year TFF will only be playing in Germany.
It is indeed an audience chanting James Brown.
It's a shipping forecast from English radio.
Fish Out Of Water.
He's living in England again and he has far more hair than me.
My involvement was limited to singing the word "run."
It's actually a preset on a Korg synth called "bouncing ball."
That was the video director Nigel Dick's idea. It was intended to be a "driving movie" and the desert outside of LA was a perfect location.
Yes, we felt it could be better and more rhythmic.
I have. I find it a little peculiar, though I feel honored that she recorded it.
Nothing planned.
The Hurting - Mad World. SFTBC - The Working Hour. SOL - Sowing The Seeds Of Love. ELAHE - Secret World.
There were two main reasons. One, Roland and I were finding it increasingly harder to agree with each other on anything. Two (and far more important), I really wasn't dealing with being famous very well, especially the lack of a private life. This was at a time when I was going through a divorce from my first wife and it became very clear that I really had no close friends in the UK, just "interested parties.” I then met Frances in New York and started to enjoy the freedom that NY gave me. No one cares who you are and I was free to be myself without being judged by anyone.
As far as singing goes, it's normally quite obvious which songs suit either of us as we have very different styles of singing. Normally the chorus is both of us.
Haven't you heard? - white boys can't dance.
It's from the TFF socialist period (he says with a smile), it's about "working for the man."
No, but my children take great pleasure in embarrassing me by singing along as loudly as possible.
No, we use words - which is a far more painful experience.
I actually met Disturbed in Chicago and went to the studio when they were recording it.
At the moment "Secret World" is my favorite TFF track (it’s normally the more recent work).
Normally it's down to whose voice suits which song. Our voices are quite different and it's normally obvious who the song suits the most.
Probably the gig in Costa Mesa California where we started the show with helicopters flying over the audience - so rock 'n' roll! (or Spinal Tap depending on your point of view - but they were full size helicopters).
13.
"Everybody Loves A Happy Ending" - it's normally the newest one.
It was a confusing time for us as we hadn't found a real direction after "The Hurting". We're really not into doing one off singles as it doesn't allow you the creative room that an album does. It's OK but certainly not the best thing we've done.
We have never recorded an acoustic album, the clips you mention are from sessions TFF did for radio and TV, where it was impossible to bring a full band.
It's an acquired taste.
Not at the moment, we're too busy doing other things. How long is a piece of string? (It varies of course.)
Because Elllll-trrrringham hasn't created one in his spare time. (For those of you who don't know Fred, he was responsible for all the drums on ELAHE and HP, and obviously has too much free time on his hands right now.)
We haven't spoken for a while, but last I heard he was fine and had just finished writing a book. He also travels a lot so is hard to pin down.
