Forgive me Kooks for I have sunned (it's hot here)...
... it's been a while since the last blog and hopefully I'll get away with a few hail marys and avoid the lashes (although the butterfly kisses on the cheek D&W give me with theirs are quite nice).
As I mentioned, last weekend I was in Santa Barbara for a wedding and a fun affair it was. Ten adults, eight kids, as Sly Stone would say "it's a family affair." Good food, good company and kids frolicking on the beach (I of course am too old to frolic or bust a move, but I did say "isn't this nice" a couple of times).
It was nice to see a few of you at the Creative Commons event last week. For those of you who don't know exactly what that is, it's a new way of being able to license your music. As opposed to stamping "all rights reserved" on a CD I can easily give various, and legally binding, parameters for people to use my music should they so desire. In my case the license says that you can use the music in any way as long as you're not making money from it and that you credit me as an artist. Yes it's that simple so I'm an ardent supporter of it. It means that I don't have to hire a lawyer and everyone knows quite clearly what permissions are given. For more info go to www.creativecommons.org. We've also posted some photos from the event, which you can see on the Photos page.
Speaking of photos, we've added some more pictures to the HP Release Party photoset. So if you haven't taken a look-see since the set first went up, head on over.
Thanks to all, again, for the wonderful birthday gifts I received. I know I've been a bit tardy in my personal responses but rest assured that they got here and that they are greatly appreciated.
I'll get around to specific questions you've sent at the beginning of next week when I have time to go through the various mailboxes.
However, I know there have been a few questions about the HP Deluxe Package so I'll address that. The design is still underway and we are looking to release it sometime in the fall. The reason for this is that we've decided it would be a good idea for me to finish writing the short stories that go with each song and include them all in the booklet. I'm not the quickest writer in the world, hence the delay, but I promise it will be well worth the wait.
I've been spending much time with the kids of course as they're on vacation. Wilder is at tennis camp and Diva "doesn't do camp" (her words not mine). We have done a few movies, "Get Smart" being the top of our list so far.
It's been a little quiet on the political front but I'm sure that will all change as soon as the conventions happen. Until then I'll have to content myself with my Rock The Vote and Yes We Can t-shirts.
Tomorrow is my first July 4th as an American citizen, I'll be singing the National Anthem loud and proud with Charlton and Harry at the LA Galaxy game!
'Till next week - happy 4th to my American brethren and EZEZEZ to everyone.
Papa S. is off to a pre 4th BBQ.

It's actually my 6 y/o daughter and neither of them would do anything they didn't consider fun. I encourage both to enjoy what they do. As my now 8 y/o daughter said when she was invited onto the gymnastics performance team - "I'm not going to be a professional gymnast so I don't want to do the extra 2 hours a week, I'd like it to be something I enjoy in my own time". She's still just doing the one hour a week and loves it.

As a former highly ranked So. Cal tennis player with a very aggressive father that pushed me away from the game to spending most of my teen years listening to bands like TFF AS a 14 year old " The hurting" WHICH in a way was an escape from all the b.s at the time- all I can recommend as the father of a 10 year old daughter that takes lessons now- not from me- is be patient and make it fun !
Thanks for all the good wishes. It was a fun day, peddle boating on a lake w/kids, until I attended the LA Galaxy game. It has to go down as one of the worst performances I've ever had the misfortune of seeing - hopefully they'll be better this Thursday. With regards to the samples - people can use them if they wish as long as they pay the writer and give them a publishing credit.

"I of course am too old to frolic or bust a move, but I did say "isn't this nice" a couple of times"
That sounds like a song lyric.
Happy July 4th to you Curt! Here in Canada, that doesn't mean much...We celebrate Canada Day on July 1st, as you are probably aware. However, where I'm from, July 4th is actually the start of what we fondly call "The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth", aka, the Stampede. It's a time of madness and, for anyone who takes transit, also a time of frustration, as trains get quite packed.

Happy 4th Papa Smith! I spent yesterday taking my kids to the National Aquarium in Baltimore, so I'm a bit late checking in!
No wet noodle lashes, though I agree about the butterfly kisses - much nicer! And I have a Rosary you can borrow for your Hail Mary's...
Too old to frolic...are you kidding me? Old is 90, you're not even close!
So, I'll keep checking my e-mail - let me know what you think about my HP "donation"...I really do hope you liked it. Anyone who wants to see what it was, I'll be putting up a pic on my myspace (www.myspace.com/suziecooks4you) next week now that I know you got it, Curt.
Like the idea of Creative Commons. I do a lot of work with intellectual property in my 9-5 job and it sounds like a great idea. For us (at my Sandler job) though, it wouldn't work - the ideas that we trademark an copyright aren't able to be used without making money from them, so we are rather vigilant about getting it all registered properly and then keeping the "all rights reserved" and legal parameters. Glad it works for you, though!
OMG I had a laugh over "doesn't do camp"! My son said the exact same thing! But now he's complaining how bored he is every day! My daughter goes to camp at her after school daycare 2 weeks each summer and does many activities including horseback riding - loves that!
Sing loud and proud, Papa Smith - I'll be doing the same. I love being an American - and I'm glad you're one too!

Dear Curt:
Happy very 1st Independence Day to you! It's refreshing to see how appreciative you are of being an American citizen whereas there are some who take it for granted...
It was great to see you last week (a week ago already!) and it was quite an interesting evening where we learned about music licensing as you mentioned above.
Also, delighted to chat with your "team": Afton (a passionate person who loves her music and children!), Gruno (busy busy working as usual - never saw him take a break!) and Arlene was very cordial and there to support you (you're lucky to have her!)
Looking forward to seeing you (and the "team") again on the 23rd!
Jaynie
Happy 4th to you Papa Smith!x o x o
Here's a question: my husband has found several versions of EWTRTW by many artists, Nas is a hip hop group that comes to mind. They sample the song. Many artists have. A compliment it may be, but do they have permission to do so? How does that work? How do you react when you hear that? I remember a year or two ago a commercial used that song .
p.s. you are not too old to frolic or "bust a move". you are far too young and fit for such talk! oh- and did you get suzanne's HP cross stitch? how the heck did she do that?

Wish I could have been anywhere where you were singing live. We spent the 4th in Savannah. I am always trying to promote HP where ever I go. You are a great dad. Thanks for sharing your life with us.
